I seem to love writing packing lists. So here’s another one to give you all a sense of what I carry when I’m on the road. I’m about to romp around SE Asia for a month — where it’s supposed to be hot! (90F) and dry! (or so they say)
- My one medium packing cube full of clothes. Which includes 3 pairs of hiking pants and 4 technical t-shirts, 1 set of pajamas.
- My 20L dry bag. Packs down easy, doubles as a carry-on if needed.
- Flip flops for the summa summa time.
- Camp towel, for when there are no towels.
- Chacos! The main shoes I will be wearing. Has enough webbing to be water shoes. I will be spending a lot of time in boats, so.
- My solar-powered lamp, for situations where light will be needed but I have none.
- Mosquito-free sleeping liner, for the sketchy guestroom and for dengue/malaria prevention.
- A portable clothing drying line.
- What I use as a bear hang when I’m out backpacking, but some cordelette & small non-technical carabiners that… can be useful.
- Old gym bag that I never use anymore is a laundry bag.
- A tote bag that is my “personal item” on the plane.
- Sleeping pad, for possible evenings when I need to sleep on the floor, and an inflatable pillow.
- All. The. Instant. Coffee. And to the right of it (unnumbered), is a 8-pack of Gatorade powder (because rehydration salts are gross. Let’s be honest with ourselves now.)
- Face masks, because #selfcare.
- Wet Wipes. On principle.
- 3 tubes of picaridin, because it’s a much more effective mosquito repellent, and two tubes of sunscreen.
- My amazing electronic cord organizer kit.
- A sarong. Multipurpose: beach cover up, longyi, blanket, etc.
- SAM splint. In case you need to immobilize a joint. If you take away anything from a Hostile Environment and First Aid Training, it’s to keep a SAM splint in your bag.
- Steripen, for potable water. Basically, I think I’m camping.
- Emergency poncho.
- Headlamp, for the sketchy hole-in-the-ground that others call a toilet.
- I am bringing back the fanny pack.
- Travel probiotics, for when I purge my immune system with antibiotics.
- Sleep kit = inflatable neck pillow, eye mask, ear plugs, and melatonin.
- A receipt book. Super clutch when you have to keep track of expenses, in a country that mostly runs on cash transactions.
- Camping cup and spork.
- Theraband and massage balls. Filed under #selfcare. Don’t judge.
- Anti-creeper tools: rubber doorstop, personal alarm. Not pictured: my ‘wedding band.’
- Burts Bees face wipes to feel refreshed (even if I will look haggard AF)
- Kindle.
- My trusty Nikon with wide angle + 35mm lens.
Not pictured: my toiletries, laptop and other such items, snacks (a lot of them), extra batteries, tissues, a skirt (!), and my medical kit.
